On the GoozNews blog, anonymous blogger "PM" discussed a set of guidelines written last year on the prevention of operative bleeding. The guidelines endorsed aprotinin to reduce bleeding despite concerns raised in a 2006 New England Journal of Medicine article. Subsequently, several studies showing increased risks of mortality for patients receiving the drug, and it is now off the market.
